2022 CRA Accessibility Plan

On July 11, 2019, the Accessible Canada Act was enacted – formalizing the Government of Canada’s commitment to proactively identify, remove, and prevent barriers to accessibility wherever individuals interact with federal programs. A goal of the Act aims to make Canada barrier-free by 2040.

To support this goal, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) invited persons with disabilities and their caregivers across Canada to participate in a consultation process. The process ran from April 21 to May 31 and is now closed. A public report on this consultation process will be shared in July 2022. The input received will be considered and will inform the CRA’s first-ever Accessibility Plan, set to be published by December 31, 2022.

Project Backgrounder

Accessibility is about creating communities, workplaces and services that enable everyone to participate fully in society without barriers. The Government of Canada is fully committed to improving accessibility in all that it does; this commitment is cemented by the Accessible Canada Act, which aims to make Canada barrier-free by 2040.

To support this goal, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is developing its first Accessibility Plan, which will outline its approach for identifying, removing, and preventing accessibility barriers across its programs and services.

The CRA is engaging persons with disabilities, and caregivers of persons with disabilities to ensure that their feedback and first-hand experience guide the development of the Accessibility Plan. Using these insights, the CRA aims to build a plan that focuses on the issues, challenges, and barriers that persons with disabilities face.

A Canada-wide public consultation process will be held in April and May 2022, for people with disabilities and their caregivers. Participants will be asked to share their past experiences interacting with CRA’s programs and services, the accessibility barriers that they have encountered, and suggestions for the CRA to improve the accessibility of its programs and services.

The CRA will document feedback received through this consultation process, and will use this input to inform its plan which will be published by December 31, 2022. Once the consultation process is complete, a public report will be published to share key themes and insights.

We are committed to listening to the voices of people with lived experience who are directly impacted by barriers at the CRA. To support this consultation process:
  • Consultation sessions will be held with participants across Canada;
  • Sign language interpretation, captioning services, and other accommodations will be made available upon request;
  • An honourarium will be provided to those participating in virtual group discussions or interviews.
